Need for Broader Broadband…
A prelude to the long anticipated FCC report on broadband came out last week, February 23, 2010. It will be followed by a complete report on March 17, 2010.
David Coursey wrote a nice summary in Tech Inciter. In brief, 93 million people (35% of those over 5 years old) do not have broadband coverage. Cost is cited as a primary factor. The average broadband fee is $41. A computer is also an additional expense. Add to that technophobia, aging, and difficult software, then it is surprising that the number is not even higher. We agree with Mr. Coursey, that broadband is vital to the future of the United States, just as rural electrification was in the 1930s and the Interstate Highway system in the 1950s and 1960s.
We cannot afford to let Yankee ingenuity and energy just languish because there is not a hotspot nearby. For Coursey’s full report, read more here.
The FCC report is also worth taking a few minutes of time to read. The tables are fascinating!
